Making a list, checking it again and again

As a student, I remember attending a lecture by Jeanne Baxtresser regarding time management. She spoke of how each of her students make lists at the start of each academic year to identify summer festivals, competitions, and any major performances (like degree recitals, concerto appearances, etc.). Together they make lists of repertoire in order to plan out the year. My own students know this impacted me greatly, as I begin hounding to start working on their list. Preparing for competitions can assist us in wisely multi-tasking repertoire preparation (and giving us more opportunities to perform prepared material), help us strengthen our mental and emotional "muscles" during challenging times, and generally just provide motivation through these determined goals. So - have you started your list  yet?

Here are a few opportunities to keep in mind:

  1. National Flute Association competitions for the annual convention in August. Competitions range from masterclass opportunities to flute choir membership to competitions with prizes. These are available for high school, college, and professional flutists. Repertoire is usually announced at the convention in August and online by the end of the month.
  2. Texas Flute Society competitions include a competition just for high school students (with a first prize of $1000!) and also a competition for young professional flutists. These are open to flutist from around the country and not limited to the Texas Flute Society.
  3. Houston Flute Club's Byron Hester Competition
  4. Atlanta Flute Club's Young Artist Competition
  5. Mid-South Flute Society Young Artist Competition
  6. Chicago Flute  Club has many competitions, including a piccolo competition!
  7. Flute Society of Kentucky competitions
  8. Florida Flute Association competitions
  9. Pittsburgh Flute Club may renew its competition effort
  10. Flute Society of Washington competitions
  11. ....and others!

There are many other competitions through flute organizations around the country, so be sure to do a search!
